I have always loved sewing, and when I decided to turn it into my profession, my long-standing interest in Japanese culture led me to become a wasai-shi (kimono tailor).
The work of a kimono tailor involves everything—from cutting the fabric and matching the patterns to finishing the garment—all carried out by a single person. I also give old kimono new life by remaking or repairing them so they may be passed on to the next generation. Another unique joy of this work is the opportunity to handle exquisite kimono that I would not normally be able to touch. Yet in recent years, with the rise of overseas production, it saddens me that fewer people in Japan are able to tailor our national dress with their own hands.
To deepen my understanding of kimono, I also studied the art of dressing. By actually wearing kimono in daily life, I have come to realize many subtleties about both tailoring and dressing that one cannot see otherwise. Considering each client’s body shape and needs, I pursue a fit that is truly comfortable by adjusting the measurements and carefully placing seams for ease of movement.
Wearing kimono on outings has also brought me more opportunities to enjoy traditional spaces such as tatami rooms and tea ceremonies. Each time I encounter someone with graceful manners and refined movements, I feel inspired to embody that same elegance myself—and this wish is what led me to take part in this program.
The depth of Japanese culture is such that even Japanese people do not know it fully, and I find joy in learning more every day.

裁縫が好きでそれを仕事にしたいと考え、もともと日本文化に関心を抱いていたこともあり、着物を仕立てる和裁士になりました。
和裁士の仕事は、反物の裁断から柄合わせ、仕上げまで全て一人で行います。古い着物を次の世代へ受け継ぐために仕立て直したり修理を施したりと、着物に新しい命を吹き込むこともあります。普段自分では手の届かないような高価な着物に触れられることも、この仕事ならではの喜びです。しかし近年では海外縫製が増え、日本の民族衣装を日本人の手で仕立てられる人が少なくなってきていることに寂しさを感じています。
着物への理解を深めたいと思い、着付けも学びました。
実際に自分が着て生活してみて初めて、仕立てや着付けの良し悪しに気づけることが数多くあります。体型やお悩みに合わせて寸法を考え、縫う位置を工夫することで、着やすさや歩きやすさを高め、お客様一人ひとりに合った着心地を追求しています。
着物を着てお出かけすると、和室やお茶席を楽しむ機会も増えました。所作の美しい方に出会うたびに「自分もそうなりたい」と思い、この講座に携わるようになりました。
日本文化の奥深さは、日本人であっても知らないことが多く、日々学ぶ喜びを感じています。
